Ever since he was 12 years old, QIR-B has always found it fascinating to figure out how things work. To him, there’s a certain joy when he is able to find out the technicalities behind what makes a product. This sheer curiosity soon led him to music too. As he embarked on a more in-depth journey of making music, he eventually discovered that the mixing and mastering processes of a song is just as important as the artist’s voice quality. Hence because of this, he feels that a good song is therefore a record that appeals most to the listeners’ ears. Fast forward till today, he finds himself still experimenting with all the different avenues that comes with music production. Through weekly sessions at 1Eighty Seven’s studio, QIR-B now strives to tackle various music genres as he thinks it will be a good challenge to not only fulfil his creativity and ambition, but also for self-growth as well.
From the moment his parents sent him to guitar classes at a nearby community centre, L.U.Q. knew there and then that music will be his greatest passion in life. With a former trumpeter in the police band as a father and a diehard fan of Malay songs from the 70s/80s in his mother, it also quickly became apparent that CDs of all types of genres will always be played in the Samsuri household every weekend. It was two Discman albums however, (a certain Tupac’s All Eyez on Me and Prince’s Emancipation), that truly introduced him to the majestic world of hip hop and R&b. As he grew older, the realisation soon came that not only was he interested in the constant back and forth in old-school rap; but also the soothing melodies and vocal runs from R&b songs as well. This hence naturally translated into songwriting, where he enjoys the process of trying to put raw, human emotions to words. Nowadays, he finds himself getting inspiration through all sorts of mediums; from the conversations he has with the other 1EightySeven boys to the jamming sessions over sample beats. Moving forward, L.U.Q. hopes that whatever music he puts out (either singles or features) is able to truly impact someone’s life positively and help the listener realise that “no matter how tough life can be, there will always be meaning to it all as long as we try”.
