When I do a cover, a few things have to happen.
I have to really like the song.
Unfortunately, liking a song does NOT mean that it will make a good cover.
So I listen to the song (over and over again) to get the voice of the song right. Trying to figure out if the cello part will sound interesting.
Then I look for a backing track.
This can mean 10-20 hours of listening to different tracks.
If a song is popular enough, there is generally a brilliant person or two that has recreated a backing track.
If I have been lucky enough to have this happen... I generally need to spend some time adjusting my part to match the backing track.
Unfortunately, this does not happen often.
So, then I reach out to fellow musicians that I know, hoping that they can make something. Not only because I respect their skill, but also because I'd rather have that extra connection to the music.
There is something special about playing music with someone you know.
When all else fails, I end up turning to Fiverr or other random sites.
The results from this route are often less than optimal.
When the planets are in perfect alignment (while searching for a backing track), I might come across a version that is really amazing.
That is what happened for this song.
There are some definite differences between our performances, but it absolutely was inspired by him.
How inspired?
I happily paid Stefano for his sheet music.
Then I asked my wonderful music theory teacher (conductor and friend), Bob Delfausse, to play the piano for me.
I guess what I am saying is...
In the end... there is a lot that goes into performing just a single cover song for people.
And it always matters.
Also, thanks Bob!
